RBC Bank and Carolina Hurricanes' Forward, Erik Cole, Help Trinity, NC Teacher Shop for $2,000 in School Supplies

July 21, 2009 04:04 PM

Stormy, Creighton Blackwell (RBC Bank), Leo the Lion,
Carol Madison (Stone’s Education Superstore), Patricia
Powers (Grand Prize Winner), Erik Cole (Carolina
Hurricanes Forward), David Madison (Stone’s Education
Superstore).
RBC Bank’s Tribute to Teachers Grand Prize Winner Patricia Powers cashed in her $2,000 shopping spree at Stone’s Education Superstore in Raleigh on June 10th.

Carolina Hurricanes player Erik Cole helped with the shopping along with RBC Bank’s mascot, Leo, and Hurricane’s mascot, Stormy. Cole did the grunt work -- pushed Patricia's shopping cart, restocked items she decided against, and rang up her order. Stormy and Leo the Lion helped out between competing in hula hoop contests and playing hide-and-seek with customers.

Patricia called the prize a “blessing from God,” and invaluable in the current economic climate. She bought books, a multitude of paper, pens and classroom supplies and even a new bookshelf, signed and addressed to her class by Cole. She said she was using the shopping spree to prepare herself, her team and her entire school for the coming school year.

Patricia teaches 6th grade language arts at Braxton Craven Middle School in Trinity, NC. One student nomination read, “'I think my teacher [Mrs. Powers] should win this money because she is loyal and trustworthy…we should pay her back for all her hard work and loyalty. I love Mrs. Powers like a mother.”

The Tribute to Teachers program awards 50 teachers every year across the RBC footprint with $500 to spend on their classrooms. Over 2,400 teachers were nominated in 2009. The grand prize winner is awarded a $2,000 shopping spree through a partnership with Stone’s Education Superstore.
