Georgia Tech's Falconi Wins First Pro Tournament In Atlanta

Georgia Tech rising sophomore Irina Falconi defeated seventh-seeded Jennifer Elie, 6-0, 6-4, to capture the Norman Wilkerson Tennis Experience, a $10,000 ITF Women’s Circuit tournament in Atlanta.

Falconi opened the day by breaking Elie and quickly captured the first set, 6-0. After going up 2-0 in the second set, Falconi would drop her first game of the day. With the score tied at 4-4, Falconi would break Elie and then hold serve for her first career Pro Circuit title.

"It's just awesome to be in my own backyard and to win this tournament,” Falconi said. “The fans and staff were absolutely wonderful in making me feel right at home. It's just an amazing feeling."

A member of the 2009 USTA Summer Collegiate Team, Falconi will next compete in the St. Joseph, Mo. 10K beginning on July 27.

Being played at the Sugar Creek Tennis Center, the event draws touring pros from around the world. Competition play runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the weekdays, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Irini Falconi of Georgia Tech eliminated No. 1 seed Alexandra Mueller in quarterfinals of the Norman Wilkerson Tennis Experience, a $10,000 ITF Women’s Circuit tournament in Atlanta.

Falconi, a rising sophomore, needed three sets to defeat Mueller 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. She will face fourth-seeded American Alison Riske in the second semifinal match on Saturday. Seventh seed Jennifer Elie will face Lindsey Nelson in the first semifinal match at 10 a.m.

Irini Falconi downed Lindsay Burdette, of Jackson, Ga. 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16. Burdette had a tough day, also losing in doubles with Hilary Barte. Nashville, Tenn.'s Caitlin Whoriskey was eliminated from singles by American Alison Riske 6-1, 6-1.

Among the top players in qualifying are Southerners Lauren Herring, of Greenville, N.C. and Alexandra Anghelescu, of Johns Creek, Ga.

Georgia Tech rising sophomore Irini Falconi will face Lindsay Burdette, of Jackson, Ga. Falconi defeated the No. 5 seed Gail Brodsky in the first round 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Nashville, Tenn.'s Caitlin Whoriskey downed former touring pro Jewel Peterson of College Park, Ga. 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the second round.
