Ram, Ramirez-Hidalgo To Play In Asheville

July 28, 2009 06:30 PM

Tennis pros Rajeev Ram vs. Rueben Ramirez-Hidalgo have joined the Grand Slam Asheville lineup, which is now scheduled for August 28 at the Asheville Civic Center. The date of the event has been moved from August 6 to August 28.

The promoter of the upcoming Grand Slam Asheville is well aware that the sluggish economy is making it difficult for many people to attend big-ticket events. Therefore, he's revamping the August 28 tennis extravaganza to make it accessible to more people, which was his goal when he began planning the event eight months ago.

"From the start, our goal was to host a sporting event that affords everyone the opportunity to attend," said Brian Woods, president of W Sports Marketing. "However, with Andre Agassi and Marat Safin as headliners, we were forced to set ticket prices high, which priced much of the public out of being able to attend."

As a result, he's replaced Agassi and Safin with rising ATP stars Rajeev Ram and Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo while keeping the opening showdown between the WTA's Ashley Harkleroad and local tennis star MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell.

The revised lineup has allowed him to slash ticket prices in half, with lower-level seats going for $25 and upper-level going for $20. Existing ticketholders can request and will receive a full refund from the point of purchase. Patrons can then purchase tickets at the reduced rate.

"This was a financial decision not only for us, but for the community as well," he said. "We have never wanted only die-hard tennis fans in the seats; we also want those with even minimal exposure to the sport to discover how exciting head-to-head action can be. We're excited about the talent and energy that Rajeev and Rubén will bring to the event along with Ashley and MayaBlue."

The featured bout will pit Ram against Ramirez Hidalgo in head-to-head, best-of-three-sets match.

So far in 2009, Rajeev Ram has won three titles: both singles and doubles (the latter with Jordan Kerr) at Newport and doubles (with Eric Butorac) in Chennai, India. To date, he's one of only four Americans to win titles on the 2009 ATP World Tour.

Spaniard Rubén Ramírez Hidalgo is a three-time doubles finalist. He was a quarter finalist at the 2006 French Open and nearly conquered then (and current) number one Roger Federer at Monte Carlo in 2008.

Prior to their match, the WTA's Ashley Harkleroad will take on local tennis star MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell.
