Lindsay Lee-Waters, of Dunwoody, Ga. made a strong showing at the Tangipahoa Tourism/Loeb Law Firm 25k Tennis Classic, reaching the semifinals where she lost to the eventual winner.
The 31-year-old Lee-Waters won two rounds of qualifying before advancing through three rounds of the main draw. She defeated former world No. 4 Kimko Date Krumm of Japan in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-2. The mother of an eight-year-old daughter, Lee-Waters lost to Kristie Ahn 6-4, 6-0 at the Oak Knoll Country Club in Hammond, La.
Fourteen-year-old Grace Min defeated No. 3-seed Tomoko Yonemura of Japan at Wednesday. Min, of Lawrenceville, Ga., fell to American Kimberly Couts 7-5, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
The champion was Kristie Ahn, a 16-year-old from Upper Saddle River, N.J., who captured the third USTA Pro Circuit title of her young career last week.
A wild card in the tournament, Ahn upset fourth-seeded Renata Voracova of the Czech Republic, 6-0, 6-4, in the opening round and then pulled out a thriller in her second-round match against Gabriela Paz, coming back to defeat the Venezuelan qualifier, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5). She cruised through her next two matches, with straight-set wins over Jorgelina Cravero of Argentina and Lindsay Lee-Waters of the United States, before downing Australian Sophie Ferguson, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the final.
