Melanie Oudin made her biggest impact in a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour event when she advanced to the quarterfinals of the Bell Challenge in Québec City, Canada. Oudin defeated No. 26 Sybille Bammer 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 for her biggest professional victory.
The teenager from Marietta, Ga. also defeated Olga Puchkova 6-1, 7-6(3) in the second round of the $175,000 Tier III tournament. Oudin lost to the eventual finalist Bethanie Mattek 7-6(4), 6-3 in the quarters.
Other Southerns make an impact in the tournament. Julie Ditty of Brentwood, Tenn. defeated Rrszula Radwanska in the first round before falling to Melina Czink in the second round. In doubles, Ditty of Ashland, Ky. and Carly Gullickson of Brentwood, Tenn. advanced to the second round with a win over Alina Jidkova and Liga Dekmeijere 6-2, 6-7(1), 10-5.
