Men Finish Close Second In Intersectionals

USTA Southern's men's Intersectionals team continued its strong showing and finished second in the annual national competition.

The Randy Gregson Trophy for the overall championship went to Texas and Southern fell four points shy. It's only the second time in 12 years that Southern hasn't won the trophy.

Texas did a terrific job of hosting the event and everything went perfect except the weather. Playing outside in 38 degree weather with a 15-20 mph wind is no fun.

Southern took first place in the 75s, third place in the 65s, second place in the 55s and second place in the 35s.

Again, it's been tough to get the sections to support the men's event, as only six were represented. The women held their event the week before and 12 sections participated.

The team consisted of:

Men's 35 - Dave Randall, Keith Evans, Troy Free, Aubrie DuPlooy and Ged Schwing
Men's 45 - Did not make
Men's 55 - Phil Trahan, Hugh Thomson, Jerry Kirk and Steve Duffel
Men's 65 - Hill Griffin, William Simon, Ralph Grieco, Jim Lazenby and Darrell McDonald
Men's 75 - Richard Lawson, Bob Koenig and Marvin Buchanan
