Five USTA Southern Teams Win National Championships

On the final Sunday of the USTA League presented by Chrysler National Championships another USTA Southern team was crowned champion, making it the fifth Southern team to gain the top honor this year. USTA Southern also had three finalists and one fourth place finish out of the 20 titles that were contested between September and November.

Roswell, Ga. 3.0 Senior Men

At the Darling Tennis Center in Las Vegas, Nev. the Roswell, Ga. team defeated a team from Lincoln, Calif., 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Roswell team defeated a team from Howard County, Md., 2-1 in the semifinals.

The team is captained by Don Niemas and features Billy Garmon, Thomas Slocum, Charles McBride, Christopher Hardy, Danny Pitman, Thomas Flynn, Rick Dejager, Mike Callahan, Robert Betsill, Mike Meuse, Lars Mathiassen, Jack Camp, David Whitehead, J.D. Merchant and John Heard. The senior 3.0 men out of Roswell Area Park, a public park, followed the senior 3.5 men out of the same park who also won their national championship last week in Indian Wells, Calif.

2008 3.5 Senior Women National Champions from Nashville, Tenn.

Nashville 3.5 Senior Women
The Nashville team defeated a team from Roanoke, Va., 3-0 in the Championship match, taking all three matches in straight sets. Earlier in the day, the Nashville team defeated a team from Lynnbrook, N.Y. 2-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is captained by Pat Yung-Okamoto and features Dolores Bruno, Betty Jones, Jeri Lamb, Rhee Lotito, Margaret Neblett, Shirley Reynolds, Julie Shaub, Karen Woodson and Chrystie Wooley.

As the players posed for a photo right after clinching their title, the enthusiatic team screamed, "Champeens!" "That's champions with three 'E's," explained Yung-Okamoto in her Southern drawl. "I told this team they had a shot at doing something great and see what happened."

Roswell, Ga. 3.5 Senior Men
Also, the men’s team from Roswell, Ga., representing the USTA Southern, captured the national title at the USTA League presented by Chrysler 3.5 Senior National Championships held in Indian Wells.

The Roswell team defeated a team from Philadelphia, Penn., 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Roswell team defeated a team from Las Vegas, Nev. 2-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is captained by James Meidl and features Edward Burke, William Duty, Michael Griner, Thomas Haddock, Dick Jones, Paul Leake, Larry Scruggs, James Wahl and Arthur Worley.

Meidl has had notable success before as the captian for teams out of Roswell Area Park. His 2006 team won Nationals and the 2000 team finished third. During the round-robin portion of this tournament, he sat beside a court at the facility and said, "We won right here two years ago. Right on this court. And, we're going to do it again."

Shreveport 4.5 Senior Men
The third Southern team to claim the big prize was the 4.5 senior men from Shreveport, La. They competed at the USTA League presented by Chrysler 4.5 Senior National Championships held at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.

The Shreveport, La., men’s team, representing the USTA Southern Section, defeated a team from Carmel, Ind., 2-1 in the championship match. Earlier in the day, the Shreveport team defeated a team from Laguna Hills, Calif., 3-0 in the semifinals.

The team is captained by Richard Verzaal and features Eddie Copete, Jimmy Livesay, Gus Orellana, Jorge Jiminez, Walter Paz, Drew Meyers and Philip Campbell.

USTA Southern's 2008 4.5 Adult Men's National Champions

Baton Rouge 4.5 Adult Men
A team consisting of 4.5 men from Baton Rouge, La. defeated Missouri Valley 5-0 to win the 2008 USTA League presented by Chrysler National Championships 4.5 Adult in Tucson, Ariz.

The Baton Rouge team defeated a team from Oklahoma City, Mo.., 5-0 in the Champion ship match. Earlier in the day, the Baton Rouge team defeated a team from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico., 3-2 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is captained by Ryan Dornier and features Ryan Mason, Daniel Lavie, George Newton, Bobby Hawkins, Michael Dessauer, Orlando E.Street II, James Geisler III, Ryan Tusa, John Lopoo, Sumner Bell.

“This tournament was so much fun,” said Dornier. “We’ve had such an amazing experience here and our team was able to come together at the right times and play great.” The Southern men advanced to the finals after they topped the Caribbean men in the semifinals. They then went on to take the crown by besting Missouri Valley 5-0.

The top four teams in order of finish are: Southern (Baton Rouge, La.), Missouri Valley (Oklahoma City, Okla.), Mid-Atlantic (Lynchburg, Va.), and Caribbean (Guaynabo, P.R.)

Raleigh, N.C. 5.0 Adult Women
The women’s team from Raleigh, N.C., representing USTA Southern, finished second at the USTA League presented by Chrysler 5.0 Adult National Championships held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

The Raleigh team lost to a team from Sacramento, Calif., 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Raleigh team defeated a team from Dallas, Texas 3-0 in the semifinals. They advanced to the final day of competition by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is captained by Cathy Lovett and features: Liz Simon, Myrna Bawono, Fiona Degnan, Megan Dunigan, Jacki Fralick, and Lynn Thomas.

This year’s USTA League presented by Chrysler 5.0 Adult National Championship has drawn the top twenty-six teams (13 men’s and 13 women’s) from throughout the nation.

4.0 Senior Meb Finalists, Greenwood, N.C.

Greenwood, S.C. 4.0 Senior Men


The men's team from Greenwood, S.C. lost to USTA Middle States 2-1 in the finals.

In the men’s final, Middle States and Southern were tied at 1-1 after splitting the number two and number three doubles matches. In the number one doubles match, Mihail Anghel and Bruce Becker representing Middle States scored a come from behind, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8) victory over Southern’s James Fuzy and Frankie Manning to clinch the championship, 2-1.

Team members are Jim Fuzy, Mark Horton, Frankie Manning, Guy Harrison (Captain), Drew Mundy, John Harrison, Frankie Stone and Don G. and Calhoun Mays.

4.0 Senior Women, Lexington, Ky.

Lexington, Ky. 4.0 Senior Women

The women's team from Lexington, Ky. was defeated by USTA Florida 2-1. In a thrilling women’s final, the Florida USTA section team completed an impressive run to the championship. With the scored tied at 1-1, the outcome was decided in the number three doubles match. With their teammates cheering them on, Florida’s Susan Hobbs and Ann Worthington defeated Southern’s Dell Kelly and Linda Carbone, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (6).

Baton Rouge 3.0 Adult Men
The men’s team from Baton Rouge, La., representing USTA Southern, finished fourth at the USTA League presented Chrysler 3.0 Adult National Championships held at the Randolph Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz.

The Baton Rouge team lost to a team from Lancaster, Penn., 2-3 in the third-place match. Earlier in the day, the Baton Rouge team lost to a team from Indianapolis, Ind., 2-3 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is co-captained by Brad Dupont and Mario Guadamud and features Casey Cubbedge, John Willis, Dean Bartels, Darren Boone, Jeff Martin, Donald Dawson, Charles Ayles, David Jumper, Karsten Thompson and Casey Sessums and plays at Independence Park. 

The top three teams in order of finish are: Mid-Atlantic (Columbia, Md.), Midwest (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Middle States (Lancaster, Penn.).

This year’s USTA League presented by Chrysler 3.0 Adult National Championship has drawn the top 34 teams (17 men’s and 17 women’s) from throughout the nation.

The USTA League program celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 2005.  Established in 1980, it has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year, to over 665,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.
