Ditty Takes USTA Pro Circuit Career Record for Titles

September 26, 2008 06:10 PM

Julie Ditty moved into the record books when she won her 31th and 32nd titles at the 2008 Coleman Vision Tennis Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., placing her at the summit for career USTA Pro Circuit titles.

“I knew before I went to Albuquerque that I could break the record,” Ditty, of Ashland, Ky., said. “It is a good feeling, especially being from the U.S. I just broke the Top 100, too.”

Ditty surpassed Paul Goldstein and Nana Smith (nee Miyagi), who both have 30 USTA Pro Circuit titles. The 29-year-old  Ditty beat No. 1 seed Rosana De Los Rios of Paraguay, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the singles final. She also won the doubles with Carly Gullickson of Brentwood, Tenn., to defeat Argentina’s Jorgelina Cravero and Betina Jozami, 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles final. Of her 32 titles, Ditty owns nine USTA Pro Circuit singles titles and 23 doubles crowns.

The circuit is considered the sport's minor leagues where young and established players accumulate rankings and prize money that helps jetison them into the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA pro tours. Many of the top USTA Pro Circuit players often gain direct entry into the Grand Slams and other tour tournaments based on their success on the junior circuit.

Ditty, a graduate of Vanderbilt, and Gullickson are having another outstanding week as they have advanced to the finals of the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Tennis Classic on the ITF Women's Circuit in Ditty's hometown. Gullickson has also advanced to the singles finals in the tournament.

Ditty is having one of her best years, having played into the main draw of the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon.
