Six Chosen for U.S. Cup Teams; To Play in Turkey

The USTA has selected Brenda Carter of Charleston, S.C. to be a member of the U.S. Alice Marble Cup Team for women 60 and over. Carter will compete with her team in this year’s international team competition on the red clay courts in Antalya, Turkey, Oct 12 -18. In the 2007 Marble Cup competition held in Christ Church, New Zealand, the U.S. took the bronze medal and will be looking to claim the gold this year, with Carter again the captain. Carter is a member of a four-woman team selected by the USTA from the very best American players in her age division. Her teammates include Molly Hahn of Belmont, Mass.; Betty Wachob of Panama City, Fla. and Patricia Keleman of Bethlehem, Pa. This event is sponsored annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and all member nations are eligible to field teams.

In 2007, Carter won the world 60’s singles title and was the finalist in the doubles. She is currently the number-one-ranked singles player in the United States (60 and over) and number one in doubles with teammate Betty Wachob. Her 2007 National singles titles include the Outdoor Hard court, Indoor, and Clay ourt, as well as finalist on the Grass. Her doubles titles include Outdoor Hard, Grass and Clay.

Rachael Gale

Also selected was Rachel Gale of Cary, N.C. to join the 2008 United States team. Gale will compete in this year’s Suzanne Lenglen Cup international tennis competition played on European red clay courts.

This prestigious Cup is for international tennis team competition for women ages 35 and older. It is sponsored annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). Gale is one of a four women team selected by the USTA from the very best players in her age division. Her teammates include Julie Cass and Michelle King, both from Austin, Texas, and Trish Riddell of Maitland, Florida.

Gale will be playing on the Cup team for the first time. In 2008, she was runner up in singles in the 35’s National Indoor and 3rd at the 35’s National Claycourts.

Fran Chandler

Fran Chandler of Jackson, Tenn. was named captain of the U.S. Margaret Court Cup Team for women 45 and over. Chandler was also a member of the 2007 Margaret Court Cup team that finished third and the 2006 team that won the event. She also captured gold in 2003 as a member of the winning Young Cup team (women’s 40 and over) and bronze in 2004 as a member of the Young Cup team. Chandler is one of four members of the women’s team selected by the USTA from the very best American players in her age division. Her teammates include Mariana Hollman, Winston Salem, S.C., Myke Loomis, Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. and Susan Boyer, Coral Sorings, Fla.

Chandler has a long history as an outstanding tennis player, as indicated by her 2007 induction into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. More recently, she has won numerous national titles, including the 2007 45 and over national clay court singles and doubles, and in 2008, the 45 and over national clay court singles and doubles titles and the 45 and over national indoor singles title.

Hollman

This is Hollman’s first year as a member of the Margaret Court Cup team; from 2002-2007 she was a member of the Young Cup team for players 40 and over, which won gold in 2003, 2005, and 2006. Hollman also has an outstanding record as an individual. She finished 2007 as the top player in the nation in 45 and over singles. She is the holder of over 20 gold balls, signifying national championships, in singles and doubles, as well as more than 25 silver and bronze balls.

Renata Marcinkowska of Rock Hill, S.C. was named to the 2008 United States Women’s Young Cup team for women 40 and over. Her teammates include Mary Dailey from Delray Beach, Fla., Robin Keener from Melbourne, Fla. and Anna Zimmerman from Indianapolis, Ind.

Marcinkowska will be playing on the Young Cup team for the second time, although this is her fourth time playing on a cup team for the US. She was ranked #1 in the world in singles for women’s 35s in 2004 and 2005. Currently she is #1 in the nation in women’s 40s singles. Marcinkowska graduated from Oklahoma State University and is currently an independent tennis consultant.

Tom Smith of Alpharetta, Ga. was selected to be a member of the Austria Cup team. Smith, who was ranked #3 in the country in the mens 55s age group in 2007, is one of four men who will represent the USA in the Austria Cup matches. The other team members are Larry Turville, Dunellon, Fla., Phil Landauer of Dublin, Ohio, and Len Wofford of Portland, Oregon. Smith, a veteran of international competition, was a member of the last year’s Fred Perry Cup team, which represented the USA in the men’s 50s team competition.

Smith works as an independent teaching tennis pro in the Atlanta area. He has won many National singles and doubles titles over the past 20 years. This year, he has won the National Indoors Doubles Championship.
