Jenkins Finishes Second in Pro Circuit Event

July 8, 2008 04:22 PM

The Nielsen USTA Pro Tennis Championship was held June 30 – July 5 in Winnetka, IL. The hard court tournament is a $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger. Southern player, Scoville Jenkins had a successful tournament but unfortunately fell short in the final match.

Jenkins began play in the main draw against qualifier Phillip Simmonds. After losing the first set, Jenkins battled back to take the match 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-3. In the second round Jenkins matched up against Korea’s Jae Sung An, and quickly prevailed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

In the next round, Jenkins played the second seed from Japan, Go Soeda. It was a tightly played match, with Jenkins eventually winning 7-5, 7-6(5). After defeating the second seed, Jenkins had to play third seeded Robert Kendrick. Jenkins was down 4-5 in the first set when Kendrick had to retire due to an injured calf.

Jenkins all of a sudden found himself in the final match of the tournament, up against Rajeev Ram. Ram had already beaten top seeded Vincent Spadea in the first round of the tournament. Although the match was close, Jenkins was not able to come out ahead this time, losing 5-7, 4-6. It was a good showing for Jenkins that came up just a bit short.
