Wimbledon Update: Reynolds into Third Round

June 25, 2008 12:04 PM

Southern Section players did not fare well in the opening round of Wimbledon. Bobby Reynolds was the lone Southern player remaining after the first round in London. A shortened first round match against Filippo Volandri allowed Reynolds more time to prepare, as he had another strong showing in the second round.

Reynolds’ opponent in the second round was Canada’s Frank Dancevic. Dancevic was coming off a good first round victory in which he had no problem with seventh seeded David Nalbandian, winning 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Dancevic continued this strong play and was able to take the first set from Reynolds. Reynolds bounced back and played a very solid match. 27 aces allowed Reynolds to earn easy points off his serve. Reynolds also was successful in winning 87% of the points when he connected on his first serve. A solid net game was also a factor for Reynolds in the match. Reynolds won 74% of the points when coming to net, on his way to a 4-6, 7-6(10), 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Up next in the third round for Reynolds will be Spain’s Feliciano Lopez. Lopez has beaten Brian Dabul and Roko Karanusic to reach the third round. Lopez reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2005 before losing to Lleyton Hewitt. This will be the first time Reynolds has faced Lopez in his career.
