The International Grass Court Championships brought together a variety of junior players, including some of the top juniors in America. Devin Britton, of Brandon, MS took to the courts in Philadelphia looking to compete against the top players. With grass being Britton’s favorite surface, he was able to advance through a few tests and eventually won the title.
In the first round of the tournament, Britton went up against Johnathan Cypers. Britton had no problem with the qualifier, winning the match 6-1, 6-1. In the second round, it was North Carolina’s Ryan Noble trying to knock off Britton. Britton withstood the challenge for a 6-3, 6-4 victory. Britton’s quarterfinal match ended early as he was up 6-2, 1-0 and his opponent Frank Carleton had to retire after injuring his ankle.
Britton was easily on to the semifinals of the tournament, where he would face Jordan Cox. In his toughest match yet, Britton took down Cox with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Britton’s opponent in the finals would be Ryan Lipman. Lipman was a finalist the previous year, but lost to Bradley Klahn. In a tight final match, Britton was able to come through in the end with a 6-4, 7-6(7) straight set victory to take the grass court title.
It will be a busy next couple of weeks for Britton, as he will travel to England to compete at Roehampton. Britton will also be competing in the junior draw of Wimbeldon.
