USTA Southern Section Announces New Director of Adult Tennis

May 6, 2008 12:15 PM
The USTA Southern Section has announced that USTA Southern Director of Communications and Publications, Holly Goddard, had been named as the new USTA Southern Director of Adult Tennis. Goddard will be transitioning into the role, currently held by Marilyn Sherman, at a timetable to be determined.

Goddard first joined USTA Southern as an intern in 2004 and was hired on as Promotions Manager in the Marketing department where she served until 2006 when she was promoted to Director of Communications and Publications. In her new role, Goddard will be responsible for administering and promoting adult league programs in the USTA Southern Section including USTA League Tennis (Adult, Senior, Mixed Doubles, Super Seniors Divisions), BMW Combo Doubles, Tri Level Leagues and Flex Leagues in cooperation with State League Coordinators. The USTA Southern Section currently serves over 1/3 of all USTA Recreational Adult League Players in the United States.

“It is such an honor to be chosen as Director of Adult Tennis for the USTA Southern Section,” said Goddard. “I feel extremely grateful to work in a field that I truly love and for an organization in which the volunteers and staff are so passionate. As I step into this role, I am so appreciative of Marilyn Sherman, who has done a phenomenal job for the past fifteen years in promoting our programs and our mission to grow tennis!"

"Holly is an exceptionally bright, hard working and gifted person with an added emphasis on excellent people skills,” said USTA Southern Executive Director John Callen. “Her background with sales and marketing, public relations, publication and website management will all be assets in continuing to build on new areas of adult growth and maximize play in existing programs. Holly will have the full support of our staff and volunteers as she moves into this new role as the Director of Adult Tennis."

A 2002 graduate of the Valdosta State University, Goddard garnered a BFA degree in Mass Communications and received an MS in Sport Marketing from Georgia State University in 2006.

Founded in 1881, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in this country. In addition to owning the US Open and selecting members of the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, Olympic and Paralympic teams, the USTA administers a variety of programs nationwide for players of all ages and ability levels and, as a not-for-profit organization, the association invests 100% of its proceeds to promote and develop the growth of tennis. It is divided into 17 sections, of which the USTA Southern Section is the largest. The 168,000 USTA members living in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee make up the USTA Southern Section, and account for approximately 25% of the total USTA membership. A professional staff housed in Norcross, GA carries out the USTA Southern Section’s daily operations, but policy is formed and much of the organization’s work is executed via a Board and committee structure of over 200 volunteers.
