Ninety-nine Super Seniors Teams Compete in Columbus for 12 Southern Championships Titles

April 1, 2008 11:32 AM

The USTA League Tennis Super Senior Division has nearly doubled in participation in the last five years and 800 players represented over 7,000 players now competing in the nine southern states in the 60s and 70s divisions.

The action on the court was spectacular with many team matches decided on a single court in a match tiebreaker! The team camaraderie and spirit was evident everywhere as many teams came dressed for success in team uniforms, or armed with mascots, cheering squads and daily wishes from those back home.

The weather proved to be exceptionally good and the southern hospitality provided by the Columbus (CORTA) tennis community was so appreciated that one player promised to write a letter to the editor! Kudos to Bob Offer and his army of volunteers who gave such exceptional attention to every detail needed to make a Southern Sectional Championships more than a tennis event. Mary Blackmon sent out a request for volunteers for team registration and had 17 raised hands in less than an hour! Theresa Davis and Cheryl Smith gave the players a spectacular player party at the Coca Cola Space Science Museum. Special thanks to Paul Ott for his superb entertainment and singing of his much cherished song “I am the South” dedicated for that evening to Marilyn Sherman, USTA Southern Section Director of Adult Tennis, on the announcement of her move to Dallas, TX. (Many expressed desire to obtain Paul’s music: go to www.listentotheeagle.com)

The Tournament Staff, led by Sectional Championships Tournament Chairman Dodie Hanchett and Managing Director of Adult Events Dene Owen and Referees Pat Staley and Mary Anna Scott, Mike Mathes, Helen Martin and Betty Smith, kept things running smoothly and everyone in good spirits!

Congratulations to the Champions and Finalists and good luck to our teams representing Southern at the National Championships in Mobile next month! (Champion and finalist photos will be posted here on Tuesday, April 1st).
