Venus Williams to Highlight Family Circle Cup 35th Anniversary Kick-Off Event

The Family Circle Cup’s 35th Anniversary Kick-Off Celebration, scheduled to begin at 6:00pm on Tuesday, April 15th, will present an action-packed evening of activities including the formal introduction of the star-studded player field by legendary tennis commentator Bud Collins and a first-ever fireworks display at the Cup. Highlighting this entertaining night under the stars, six-time Grand Slam winner and 2004 Family Circle Cup Champion Venus Williams is officially scheduled to play in the feature match of the evening. The Family Circle Cup, America’s oldest Tier I clay court event, is celebrating its 35th Anniversary April 12 - 20, 2008 at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

The tournament’s opening night session on Tuesday is billed as “Girls Night Out presented by The Post & Courier” which features a half price ticket for all women attending the session. Prior to match play, the Family Circle Cup’s 35th Anniversary Kick-Off Celebration will be emceed by famed commentator Bud Collins, who will welcome the entire 2008 player field onto Family Circle Magazine Stadium court to greet fans in a special ceremony. Following the player introductions, a commemorative video will create a memorable look back at the many incredible Family Circle Cup moments etched in history. Collins will emcee this unique evening that will feature a variety of special activities including a performance from the Burke High School marching band, and presentation of colors by The Citadel Color Guard in a special military salute recognizing the men and women who valiantly defend our great country. To cap off a perfect night of world class tennis, Family Circle Cup will host their first ever fireworks display that will entertain and amaze fans of all ages.
