The USTA announced that the Florence (S.C.) Tennis Association (FTA) has been selected as the 2007 National Community Tennis Association of the Year. They will be honored before more than 600 community tennis leaders at the annual USTA Community Tennis Development Workshop held on February 23, 2008 at the Flamingo in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Florence Tennis Association has achieved accomplishments typically reserved for much larger associations. While serving a population of nearly 40,000, the FTA has established a high school tennis tournament, launched an at-risk kids’ sports camp, worked with 50 local businesses to contribute to the game of tennis, and are on the verge of building a 30-court public tennis facility. Throughout the year, more than 400 FTA volunteers organize camps and clinics, a Recreational Coaches’ Workshop, an annual membership-drive cookout, Welcome Back to Tennis event, and a Tennis Block Party.

In addition, the FTA has provided support for CTA's in the neighboring communities of Hartsville and Sumter by offering advice and assistance.

“The FTA’s commitment and dedication to growing the game of tennis in Florence is outstanding and has earned them the 2007 Community Tennis Association of the Year Award,” said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. “Their hard work and perseverance has enabled them to achieve the type of accomplishments usually reserved for much larger organizations.”

“It is an honor to be chosen as the CTA of the Year by the USTA,” said Ed Sprenger, President, Florence Tennis Association. “We are delighted that our organization has been recognized for the work it does which always has a direct benefit to the community.”
