For over three decades, with the help of a strong volunteer base, the Family Circle Cup has continued to showcase the top women tennis players in the world at one of the premier sporting events in the country. The Family Circle Cup is once again accepting applications for over 375 adult volunteer positions serving in a variety of categories throughout the event, and more than 175 juniors who are interested in joining the Ball Crew. Detailed volunteer information and official applications are available on-line at www.familycirclecup.com, or can be picked up at the Family Circle Tennis Center Clubhouse on Daniel Island. The 2008 Family Circle Cup, America’s oldest Tier I event, is scheduled for April 12-20th at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

Jo Cooper, a veteran Family Circle Cup volunteer with six years of experience in the transportation department and a Daniel Island resident since 1999, has been hired effective immediately as Volunteer Coordinator of the 2008 Family Circle Cup. Cooper is replacing Mary Neves Richards who after seven years of diligent service has chosen to vacate the position to spend more time with her growing family. Richards will continue with the Family Circle Cup in a consulting capacity to assure a smooth transition of responsibilities.

As Volunteer Coordinator, Jo Cooper will oversee the entire Family Circle Cup volunteer program and assign volunteer chair people for specific tournament areas. Over the past seven years, the volunteer base has grown to include not only local tri-county residents, but also individuals from across the country who want to be involved with this premier tennis event.

“The success of the Family Circle Cup is built of the selfless contributions of our volunteers who play such an important role in the presentation of this world class event,” stated Robin Reynolds, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director. “We receive numerous compliments each year from fans and players alike who appreciate the outgoing personalities and genuine southern hospitality of our volunteers. Their work ethic is second to none, and we simply could not run this event without them.”

“Many of our volunteers come back year after year and are very committed to their departments. Their dedication, experience, and enthusiasm are what make everything run so smoothly,” commented Cooper. “I know that our volunteers are very excited to be a part of this special year as we gear up for the Family Circle Cup’s huge 35th anniversary celebration. Their energy will be a big part of what makes this event so special.”

Adult volunteer opportunities involve 18 areas including Guest Services, Media Center, Information Technology, Players’ Lounge, Ticket Office, Transportation, Ushers, Food & Beverage Compound, Drawboards, Scoreboards, Volunteer Cafe, Adult Ball Crew, Court Maintenance, and other areas. Adult volunteers are required to work at least 6 shifts (24 hours) throughout the nine day event. For more information about adult volunteerism at the Family Circle Cup, direct inquiries to Jo Cooper, Volunteer Coordinator at Volunteers@familycirclecup.com, or by leaving a message on the Family Circle Cup volunteer hotline at (843) 849-5309 where all messages will be promptly returned.
