A Family Affair: A Story at Southern Sectionals

October 26, 2007 01:35 PM

John T. (Jake) Jacobs and his wife Paula did not realize that a thoughtful Christmas present, from their youngest daughter Toni and her husband Brandon, would impact their lives and bring their family closer together. The five year USTA membership they received from Toni and Brandon started out as a mother-daughter bonding activity, but quickly developed into a family affair.

Toni and Paula spent two wonderful seasons playing 3.0 Women's Doubles. They even won a small invitational tournament (Lexington Life) in their bracket and got their picture in the town's magazine.

Later on, Toni was able to convince her dad, Jake, into joining a 5.0 mixed doubles with the promise that he could be her partner. Not only did they have an amazing time playing, but they also became the team to beat. Even Jake’s son in law, Brandon, is getting in on the family bonding by partnering up with him this fall on a men’s doubles team.

Jake and his team experienced a fun and successful winning season in their local league, LATA - Lexington Area Tennis Association. Then they won their state tournament in Charleston, S.C. They where on a roll towards their nest stop, Sectionals. Before he could head off to Sectionals, he learned that his three daughters had planned a surprise party for his 60th birthday and wedding anniversary.

After many discussions and much planning they changed their "surprise party" plans and ended up following their dad’s team to Sectionals. According to Jake, that was an incredible way to spend his birthday and wedding anniversary, with his family and tennis friends, which won the Southern Sectionals tournament. “Just having the opportunity for my wife and I to play tennis with our daughter and son-in-law is so special. But now to win our League, win our State Tourney plus go to Sectionals and come out of such a competitive tourney as the WINNER made for a weekend that my wife and I will never, ever, ever forget!”
