Carter to Captain United States Women’s 60 Tennis Team

The United States Tennis Association has selected Brenda Carter of Charleston, South Carolina, as a member and captain of the 2007 United States Women’s Tennis Team. Carter will compete in this year’s Alice Marble Cup international tennis competition in Christchurch, New Zealand, November 26th through December 1st, 2007. This year’s competition will be played on plexipave hard courts.

The US finished 5th in competition in 2006 in Antalya, Turkey. The US will attempt to win the Cup when it competes in New Zealand against ten of the world’s top women’s tennis teams. This prestigious Cup is for international tennis team competition for women ages 60 and older. It is sponsored annually by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Brenda Carter played for the USA Marble Cup team in 2006, and on the Connolly Cup team from 2002 to 2006. In addition, Carter has won 16 major tennis titles, including the 55’s National Claycourt, Hardcourt, and Indoor Singles Championships. In 2007, Carter won both singles and doubles at the 60’s National Claycourts and Hardcourts. She was the singles champion at the 60’s National Indoors and the doubles champion at the 60’s National Grasscourts. Carter is currently ranked #1 in the nation in both singles and doubles.

Carter graduated from the University of Georgia in 1968 with a B.S. in Mathematics. She completed her Master’s degree in Mathematics at Georgia Southern University in 1978. She retired from Georgia Southern University in 1999 and resides in Charleston with her husband, Harry. She has two grown children, Bill and Ashley, and two granddaughters.

As one of only four players chosen from the United States’ top women’s senior players, Brenda will add strength and valuable singles and doubles tournament experience to the US team. The other 3 team members are Carol Clay of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Betty Wachob of Panama City, Florida, and Judy Louie of Corona Del Mar, California.

The United States Tennis Association owns and stages the US Open and selects the men’s and women’s teams that compete in major Davis Cup, Fed Cup and Olympic Games competition. It also selects and sponsors top US players in various age groups for the USTA tennis teams, including the US Women’s 60 team, that represent the US in international team tennis competitions against some of the world’s best players.

The USTA is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in America and is a non-profit organization with more than 700,000 members. It invests all of its resources to promote and develop the growth of tennis, from the grass roots to international individual and professional levels.
