Jenkins Picks Up First Round Win Over Joseph

June 13, 2007 10:11 AM

Fifth-seeded Scoville Jenkins outlasted fellow Southern Section native Lesley Joseph 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 Tuesday in the first round of the $15,000 USTA Men's Professional Tournament at Del Oro High School.

Jenkins, 20, of Atlanta, reached the second round of the 2005 U.S. Open, sandwiched between first-round losses. He fell to Andy Roddick in 2004 and Rafael Nadal the next year. Both matches were in Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest tennis facility in the world with a capacity of 23,000.

Earlier in 2004, Jenkins became the first African American to win the boys national hardcourt title.
