USTA Pro Circuit Events Visit Southern Section

The Pelham Racquet Club will host the M & F Bank $25,000 Women’s USTA Pro Circuit Event April 2nd- 8th in Pelham, AL. The Challenger is the 12th of 42 USTA Pro Circuit women’s tournaments scheduled this year and eighth of 12 at the $25,000 prize level. Qualifying rounds will be played Sunday, April 1 and Monday, April 2. The main draw is scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 3, with the finals to be played Sunday, April 8. All rounds of play will take place at the Pelham Racquet Club in Pelham, Ala.

This week’s clay court tournament in Pelham kicks off a stretch of seven-straight clay court women’s events, slated for the weeks of April 2 through May 14. Other clay court tournaments include $25,000 Jackson, Miss. (April 9), $75,000 Dothan, Ala. (April 16), $50,000 Sea Island, Ga. (April 23), $50,000 Charlottesville, Va. (April 30), $50,000 Indian Harbour Beach, Fla. (May 7) and $25,000 Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. (May 14).

Edina Gallovits of Romania is the top ranked player in the field this week at No. 104. She was runner-up at the $50,000 Waikoloa and won the $25,000 Palm Desert doubles title with Julie Ditty of Ashland, Ky. Ditty is also scheduled to play in the main draw. She holds a ranking of No. 194.

The U.S. contingent is led by Abigail Spears of Pueblo, Colo. and Raquel Kops-Jones of Fresno, Calif. Spears is currently ranked No. 120 in the world and won the $75,000 Midland doubles title with Laura Granville. No. 193 Kops-Jones won her sixth career doubles title this year by winning the $50,000 Waikoloa with Natalie Grandin of South Africa.

Wolfe Lumber 25K Challenger
Hammond, LA

After two events in California, the women have traveled south to compete at the Wolfe Lumber Women's $25K Challenger in Hammond, La. The tournament was first held in 2005 and last year became the first professional tennis event to take place in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area in August 2005.

Alla Kudryavtseva, a 19-year-old Russian, leads this year’s field as the tournament's No. 1 seed. Other seeded players include No. 2 Hana Sromova of the Czech Republic and last week's singles champion at Redding, Su-Wei Hsieh, who is seeded third in the draw.

Southern natives competing in Hammond include Redding doubles champion Julie Ditty,wild cards Lindsay Lee-Waters and Mallory Cecil.
