Volunteers and Ball Crew Needed for the 2007 Family Circle Cup

January 8, 2007 11:43 AM

For over three decades, with the help of a strong volunteer base, the Family Circle Cup has continued to showcase the top women tennis players in the world at one of the premier sporting events in the country. The Family Circle Cup is once again accepting applications for over 375 adult volunteer positions serving in a variety of categories throughout the event, and more than 175 juniors who are interested in joining the Ball Crew. Detailed volunteer information and official applications are available on the Family Circle Cup website www.familycirclecup.com, or can be picked up at the Family Circle Tennis Center Clubhouse on Daniel Island. The 2007 Family Circle Cup is scheduled for April 7-15th at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.

“Our volunteers and ball crew play an important role in making the Family Circle Cup a world class event that is enjoyed by the players and fans alike,” stated Robin Reynolds, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director. “We truly appreciate the effort they put into making this event a success, and we know they enjoy their time spent with us each year.”

Since the 2001 Family Circle Cup, local Charleston resident Neves Richards has served as Volunteer Coordinator overseeing the entire volunteer program and assigning volunteer chair people for specific tournament areas. Over the past six years, the volunteer base has grown to include not only local tri-county residents, but also individuals from across the country who want to be involved with this premier tennis event.

“We always look forward to the new faces that join our team since volunteers play a critical role in the operation of the tournament. We have been very fortunate to have such a high rate of returning volunteers as well,” commented Richards. “Many volunteers take their vacations just to be here during the tournament. That enthusiasm and commitment is what makes our volunteers so special.”

Adult volunteer opportunities involve 17 areas including Guest Services, Media Center, Players’ Lounge, Ticket Office, Transportation, Ushers, Food & Beverage Compound, Drawboards, Scoreboards, Volunteer Cafe, Adult Ball Crew, Court Maintenance, and other areas. Adult volunteers are required to work at least 6 shifts (24 hours) throughout the nine day event. For more information about adult volunteerism at the Family Circle Cup, direct inquiries to Neves Richards, Volunteer Coordinator at mnrfcc@comcast.net, or by leaving a message on the Family Circle Cup volunteer hotline at (843) 849-5309 where all messages will be promptly returned.

Every year the Family Circle Cup secures 175 juniors (ages 11-18) for the Ball Crew. An informational session will be held prior to the first training session on Saturday, January 20th, 2007 at 12:30pm at the Family Circle Tennis Center located at 161 Seven Farms Drive, Daniel Island (843) 856-7900. Ball Crew training sessions will be held at the Family Circle Tennis Center from 12:30pm – 3:00pm every Saturday beginning January 20th through March 31st. A final, mandatory training session will be held at the tournament site on Daniel Island on Friday, April 6th. All Ball Crew participants are needed at the Family Circle Cup (Saturday, April 7th through Thursday, April 12th). An All-Star Team will be selected based on their ability, performance and attitude for the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, April 13th - April 15th, 2007.
