Harkleroad to Replace Williams in the Hopman Cup

An anticipated event welcoming in the start of the new tennis season, eight countries will compete for the prestigious Hyundai Hopman Cup XIX, running from December 30, 2006 through January 5, 2007.

Seeded fourth and placed into Group A is the United States. Scheduled to be respresented by five-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams and serve-and-volleyer Taylor Dent, Williams was forced to withdraw and has been replaced by Ashley Harkleroad.

Last year, the United States placed first in the international team competition behind the strong play of Dent and Lisa Raymond.

In 2004, James Blake partnered with Lindsay Davenport, and with Serena Williams in 2003, both victories for the U.S.

Also slotted in Group A with the Americans is top-seeded Russia, which features two strong singles players in Nadia Petrova and Dmitry Tursunov and host Australia, led by two big servers, Alicia Molik and Mark Philippoussis.

Headlining Group B is Spain and the Czech Repbulic. Tommy Robredo of Spain and Tomas Berdych of Czech Repbulic is among the top matches to be played in the group.

The Official Draw for the 2007 Hopman Cup on October 18 determined the remaining members of Group A & B. Groups were drawn as the following:
