USTA Southern Section Mourns the Loss of Communications Director Marc Kaplan

October 18, 2006 04:55 PM

It is with great sadness that the USTA Southern family recognizes the passing of USTA Southern Director of Communications and Publications Marc Kaplan. After a strenuous five year battle with a brain tumor, Marc passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2006. Funeral services are being held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 19th at the Hellman Memorial Chapel in Spring Valley, NY.

Marc joined the USTA Southern Section Staff as Director of Communications, Publications and Membership in August of 1999. During his tenure, Marc brought the standard of media coverage for tennis in the Southern Section to a new tier of excellence. Never one to withhold his ideas, he led the charge to include Southern-specific news in the USTA Magazine, combine state and section efforts to improve the Southern Tennis Magazine, and worked tirelessly to generate media publicity and coverage for USTA Southern events. As a great supporter and promoter of tennis his passion for tennis journalism was unrivaled and his efforts were rewarded when the USTA Southern Section was awarded the 2004 “Website of the Year” Award.

“Marc Kaplan’s courage and fortitude in both his job and his personal battle with cancer has provided inspiration to all of us here at USTA Southern that is impossible to measure,” said USTA Southern Section Executive Director, John Callen. “Marc not only battled for himself but also for many others around him that faced their own serious medical issues. We will miss Marc in so many ways and give blessings to Marc and his family.”

Not only was Marc Kaplan a great co-worker and a valuable asset to the Southern family, he was also a friend and will be sorely missed. In honor of his work and contributions to tennis journalism the USTA Southern Section Media Excellence Award has been renamed in his honor. The USTA Southern Section is proud to honor his work, life and memory by naming Marc Kaplan the first recipient of the “Marc Kaplan USTA Southern Section Media Excellence” Award.
