September 28, 2006 10:36 AM

Troy University is set to host the USTA $50,000 Women’s Tennis Classic of Troy at the Lunsford Tennis Center in Troy, AL. The USTA Challenger, played on hard courts, will begin with Qualifying matches on October 1st. Main Draw matches will begin October 3rd and continue until a winner is crowned on the following Sunday.

The Women’s Tennis Classic of Troy is offering various clinics for junior players. The event will host a free tennis clinic for the youth of Troy Housing Authority on Tuesday, October 3rd, followed by a tennis clinic for the fifth grade class of Goshen Elementary School on Wednesday. Community members are encouraged to come out and test their skills against the pros during the Pro-Am tournament held Wednesday evening. The tournament will receive media coverage from the Tennis Channel’s “Inside Tennis with the Koz” hosted by Dave “Koz” Kozlowski. The show will film highlights of the matches on October 7th and 8th. The show will air featuring match play from the finals and semifinals of the singles and doubles. Also featured will be interviews from players and tournament officials.

The Southern Section’s own Ashley Harkleroad of Rossville, Georgia enters the tournament as the #2 seed. Harkleroad was the singles champion in the ITF tournament in Louisville, Kentucky and Washington D.C., in 2005. She also won the ITF doubles tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2005 with Lee-Waters.
