The USTA today announced the creation of the US Open Champions Invitational for the 2006 US Open. The new event restructures and upgrades the existing programming currently provided at the US Open and will only feature players who were Grand Slam champions or finalists.
The new format will include men’s singles, women’s singles and mixed doubles matches and will provide equal playing opportunities for men and women (10 men and 10 women) as well as equal prize money. A total of 18 matches will be played.

“The addition of the US Open Champions Invitational will provide more excitement and more marquee names for our on-site spectators,” said Jim Curley, US Open Tournament Director. “Fans will be able to see legends such as Tracy Austin and Mats Wilander, and have the opportunity to watch Martina Navratilova play singles once again at the US Open.”

The US Open Champions Invitational will provide more compelling programming during Tuesday-Saturday of the second week of the tournament when fewer main draw matches are available outside Arthur Ashe Stadium. In addition, these marquee matches may also be played within Arthur Ashe Stadium on a select basis.
