USTA Atlanta Honors Volunteer Mac MacDougal with “The Spirit Of Tennis Award”

July 29, 2006 12:37 PM

USTA Atlanta proudly announced Mac MacDougal as the second recipient of the organizations “Spirit of Tennis Award”. MacDougal began serving as a volunteer for the organization in 1991 as a member of the Board of Directors. MacDougal served as President of the USTA Atlanta Board from 1997 to 1999, has been a certified USTA Official since 1993, and helped create the organizations inner-city after school youth development program, which is now part of their Atlanta Youth Tennis Foundation. Sixteen years later, MacDougal continues to devote time to the organization, in addition to playing significant volunteer roles at the USTA Georgia, USTA Southern and USTA national levels. A complete list of accomplishments may be found on www.atlanta.usta.com. Mac will be recognized at the Board of Directors meeting and party in December.

“Mac has been an integral part of USTA Atlanta for many years,” stated Pat Guerry, USTA Atlanta President. “He has unselfishly given of his time and talents to grow the game of tennis not only here in Atlanta, but also across the country. I am very pleased that we are able to recognize all that Mac has done by honoring him with this award.

“When one looks at the history of our organization, it’s easy to see why we are honoring Mac,” said Matt Olson, USTA Atlanta Executive Director. “His contributions to our sport and to the USTA are endless. His dedication and passion for tennis is hard to duplicate.”

USTA Atlanta created “The Spirit of Tennis Award” in 2005 as a way to honor dedicated and outstanding volunteers for the association and the sport of tennis in the city of Atlanta. “The Spirit of Tennis Award” was created in honor of longtime volunteer and friend Laurie Futrell, who passed away in February 2005. The recipient of the award will be announced annually and selected by the President of the Board.

Futrell served as the USTA League Senior Women’s League Program Director for over 16 years and the Super Senior League Program Director since the program’s inception. She also played on several league tennis teams at DeKalb Tennis Center. Her friends at DeKalb Tennis Center made donations to help create the volunteer award.

USTA Atlanta is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 and is dedicated to the development of USTA programs and tennis within the metropolitan Atlanta area. With over 40,000 participants annually, USTA Atlanta has the largest USA League Tennis program in the United States and was awarded the USTA’s Community Tennis Association of the Year Award in 2005. A professional staff based in Norcross, carries out the daily operations but policy is formed and much of the organization's work is executed via a Board of Directors, committees and volunteers.
