20th Anniversary Southern Senior Cup Team Championships is a “Smashing” Success!

June 5, 2006 02:47 PM

The “crown jewel” of Southern tennis, the Southern Senior Cup, in its 13th year in Columbus, GA featured 300 of the top Southern players competing for their state team in Men’s and Women’s 35-75 age divisions.

Teams include several former tour players and internationally and nationally top ranked senior players competing in a unique format that awards points for victories in several categories. Georgia won the Men’s 35s Men’s 55s, and Men’s 65s; North Carolina won the Men’s 45s, Men’s 75s and Women’s 35s, South Carolina won the Women’s 55s, Women’s 65s and Women’s 75s and Tennessee won the Women’s 45s.

In addition to the superb tennis, it is the team camaraderie that makes many say this is their favorite tennis weekend of the year. The 35s cheer on the 75s, the men cheer for the women and visa versa. Many friendships are rekindled during these four days as well as great rivalries!

Columbus has hosted this event for thirteen straight years and will host the event at least through 2008! A USTA Organization of the Year, CORTA once again offered a superb weekend of social activities and amenities for the players. The largest public clay court facility in the country, Cooper Creek Tennis Center, with 30 courts, is a fantastic venue for team competition.

Kudos to Local Chairman Ken Smith and volunteers including Nita Perry and Kristi Sholtis as Social Chairman, and Andie and Adam Centerbar (Volunteer Chairman) for providing fantastic facilities, amenities and Southern hospitality! Becky Glisson, Tennis Center Manager, offered an exceptional staff for the event.

Thanks to Vicki Everette, Sr Cup Subcommittee Chairman and members Susan Habeeb, and Randy Jackson for their efforts throughout the year and Tournament Referee Carol Fowles who has been with us for eighteen of our twenty years! Dene Owen and Terri Wiley are thanked for their hard work and great rapport with the players. Becky McPhee created a fantastic slideshow enjoyed by all at the Friday night party at The Estate. The Adult/Senior Competition Committee also ensures the event’s success and is led by Vicki Everette, Chairman, Steve Duffel, Vice Chairman and members Roy Barth, Gaines Dyer, Susan Habeeb, Eben Hardie, Gus Rivera, Larry Rizzo, Mildred Southern, Jenny Settle as well as the STA’s Officer in Charge, Dudley Stewart.

We thank our captains for their time and dedication to this event! Becky Richardson, Darrell Blevins from Alabama; Jan Dennis, Hill Griffin from Georgia; Susan Habeeb, Greg Combs from Kentucky; Drew Meyers and Elizabeth Chesteen from Louisiana; Jane Holland, Cindy Sturdivant from Mississippi; Vicki and Maurice Everette from North Carolina; Roberta Case and Tom Foster from South Carolina; and Dana Butchee, John Nixon from Tennessee. They all deserve a huge thank you from their players and from the USTA Southern Section for their efforts before and during the event.

In recognition of the 20th Anniversary, a new perpetual award was created to recognize and honor an individual for their contributions to Senior Cup. The first recipient is Tommy Bartlett who served as the Men’s Captain for Tennessee for fifteen years and also played for several years. He addressed the crowd at the Saturday night banquet and reminded us all of the joy that tennis has brought to all of our lives.
