The USTA Southern Section is pleased to announce the return of the Southern Senior Cup Championships to Columbus, GA. Now in its 20th year, the Southern Senior Cup continues to be the USTA Southern Section’s crown jewel of adult competition. Up to 300 of the south’s top players are expected in Columbus to represent their state in team competition June 1-4, 2006 at the Cooper Creek Tennis Center.
Cooper Creek, now hosting the event for the 13th consecutive year, offers 30 clay courts and is recognized as the largest municipal clay court facility in the South. The City of Columbus has once again planned a weekend full of Southern hospitality and social gatherings that with the competition are sure to please the players and their guests. The players will be busy each night as event organizers have planned several night-time events including a Welcome Party, a player dinner party at The Estate, and a Cookout at Cooper Creek.

The 300 players competing are coming to Columbus from Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee and for competition will be divided into five age divisions ranging from 35-75. States select teams of up to four players to compete in single elimination matches. Each round consists of two singles and one doubles match. Daily matches begin at 8:00am.
At the end of the weekend two prestigious awards will be presented with the overall winner receiving the Mildred Southern Cup and the state with the most individual wins earning the Gil Stacey Memorial Cup.
"As we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of this prestigious event this year, the players and captains will no doubt reflect on many years of longstanding rivalries mixed with a very unique camaraderie experienced at this event,” said Marilyn Sherman, USTA Southern Section Director of Adult Tennis.
The 2006 tournament is presented by the USTA Southern Section in cooperation with strong local volunteer support. Penn is the official tournament ball of the USTA Southern Senior Cup Championships. USTA Southern enjoys much support from the Columbus Regional Tennis Association (CORTA).
