World’s Best Head to Charleston for WTA Family Circle Cup

April 10, 2006 02:29 PM

Justin Henin-Hardenne, currently ranked No. 3 in the world rankings, highlights a field of some of the world’s best that will compete at this year’s WTA Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina. This ultra-exciting tournament runs from April 10th-16th.

Henin-Hardenne enters as the tournament’s top seed and defending champion. Along with last year’s title, Henin-Hardenne won the event in 2003. Making her third appearance, she is 11-0 all-time at the Family Circle Cup.

Henin-Hardenne will have world class talent to defeat if she hopes to win her third Family Circle Cup Championship.

Nadia Petrova, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, comes to the south fresh off a tour championship win last week at the Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island. She also had success at the 2005 Australian Open earlier this year, where she was able to reach the quarterfinals. She finished the 2005 year as the world’s No. 9 ranked player.

Patty Schneider, who is no stranger to the Family Circle Cup, enters as the No. 3 seed. Schneider is making her tenth appearance at the Cup including a 2002 runner-up finish. She finished the 2005 season with a No. 7 world ranking.

Rounding out the top four seeds is Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova. Kuznetsova is best known for her magical run to win the 2004 U.S. Open which included victories over Mary Pierce and Lindsay Davenport. Kuznetsova just two weeks ago won the Miami Nasdaq-100 WTA tour event.

Included in this year’s draw is USTA Southern Section native Ashley Harkleroad. Harkleroad is originally from Rossville, Georgia. The young Georgia native hopes to surprise some of the tournament favorites with her return to the south.
