Louisiana’s First Pro Tournament After Hurricane Katrina a Success

April 3, 2006 12:30 PM

This past week, the Oak Knoll Country Club in Hammond, LA successfully hosted the first professional tennis tournament in Louisiana since Hurricane Katrina hit in September of 2005. Olga Poutchkova of Russia claimed the USTA Women’s Pro Circuit crown 6-3, 6-4 over the Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova.

The Oak Knoll Country Club suffered over $400,000 in damages incurred by Hurricane Katrina, including fallen trees on tennis courts and destroyed fences. Wolfe Lumber and Tangipahoa Tourism Commission donated significant funds to help the site recover in time to host this event. It was great for professional tennis to return to Louisiana and special thanks should be sent out to Wolfe Lumber ant Tangipahoa Tourism Commission for making the event possible.

The women’s USTA Pro Circuit Tour stays in the south another week as Pelham, Alabama plays host to the Regions Bank/Morgan Keegan Trust $25,000 Women's Challenger Presented by Academy Sports & Outdoors. For complete information on tournament happenings, check out the official tournament website at www.pelhamracquetclub.com.

The USTA organizes, sponsors, and administers the USTA Pro Circuit - the gateway to the US Open and tour-level competition for aspiring tennis professionals, and a frequent battleground for established players. The 2005-2006 circuit features nearly 100 events for men and women. Prize money at the USTA Pro Circuit events range from $10,000 to $75,000, with more than $3 million in purses this year. Players also earn valuable ATP and WTA tour ranking points. The USTA Pro Circuit boasts an alumni of some of the biggest names in tennis, many of whom have gone on to win Grand Slam titles, including Andre Agassi, Lindsay Davenport, Chanda Rubin, Tim Henman, James Blake, and Mary Pierce.
