Germany’s Haas and Sweden’s Arvidsson Take Single’s Titles at Regions Morgan Keegan Championships

Many of the world’s top players including Americans Andy Roddick and James Blake gathered in Memphis, TN to participate in the 2006 Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

In the men’s singles draw, sixth seeded German Tommy Haas was the last one standing with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Swede Robin Soderling in the title match. For Haas, the former World No. 2, this was his second victory in Memphis. He captured the same title in 1999.

The women’s singles championship saw third seed Sofia Arvidsson, of Sweden, capture her first career WTA tour title. Arvidsson defeated the sixth seeded Marta Domachowska, from Poland, in a grueling 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 title match. Youth was served in this final as Arvidsson and Domachowska are 22 and 20 years of age respectively.

In men’s doubles action, South Africa’s Chris Haggard and Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic teamed together for the first time to surprise crowd favorites James Blake and Mardy Fish 0-6, 7-5, 10-5.

On the women’s side of doubles, it was the American duo of Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur who proved victorious. The American pair defeated Belarusian Victoria Azarenka and Dane Caroline Wozniacki 7-6(2), 6-3. This was the seventh doubles title for the American team since joining forces in 2005.
