MatchPoint TV Expands Into Radio

December 14, 2005 05:42 PM

Batten Communications, the creators of “Matchpoint Atlanta on 11alive” will partner with SportsRadio 790 The Zone in May 2006 to produce and air Atlanta's first-ever tennis radio program.

The hour-long program, “Matchpoint Radio,” will debut on Sports Radio 790 The Zone Saturday May 27 and air each Saturday at 2pm through the US Open tennis event in September. Matchpoint Radio will center around ALTA and USTA-related league issues, interviews and conversation, while also reporting on professional tour news. Matchpoint's television programs also return for their 9th season in May 2006.

“Atlanta tennis players and tennis fans have been waiting a long time for devoted radio coverage of the sport they play and love,” said Jeff Batten, creator and owner of ‘Matchpoint Atlanta on 11alive’ and ‘Matchpoint Radio on SportsRadio 790 The Zone.’ “We’re very pleased that such a respected station sees the value in tennis coverage and talk.”

Said 790 The Zone program director Matt Edgar: "You can't think about recreation in Atlanta without thinking about tennis, with over 80,000 active players in the metro Atlanta area. SportsRadio 790 The Zone is a natural fit for Matchpoint and I am pleased to be able to cater to the tennis fans of Atlanta on the weekends."

Matchpoint television hosts Sam Crenshaw and the USTA Southern Section's own Bill Oakes will also help anchor Matchpoint Radio along with such contributors as touring pros Luke Jensen and Brian Vahaly.

“11 Alive’s Sam Crenshaw is an avid tennis player and tennis reporter - certainly the most credible member of the Atlanta media when it comes to tennis, and nobody breaks news like Bill, who’s got contacts on every tour and in every locker room,” Batten said.

Since 1995, Batten Communications, Inc. has produced “Matchpoint Atlanta on 11alive”, “Matchpoint Southeast on CSS,” “Matchpoint Florida on Fox Sports Florida” and “Matchpoint America on The Tennis Channel.”

“Matchpoint” won the USTA’s highest honor for media excellence in 2003.
