Men's 55 and 60 Clay Court Championships Come to Duluth, GA

For the past two weeks, Duluth, GA has been home for both the USTA National Men’s 55 and Men’s 60 Clay Court Championships. It all began on October 2nd at the Atlanta Athletic Club played host to the top 53 players in the nation in the Men’s 55 division. The following week the Men’s 60 Clay Court Championship was held at the Standard Club.

The Men’s 55 singles competition was hard fought with the top Southern finish going to Armistead C. Neeley (Atlanta, GA) who lost in the semifinals. Another southern player, Padg Bolton (Monroe, LA), had a good run advancing all the way to the quarter-finals where he lost. These two men were among 29 total competitors from the USTA Southern Section’s nine states.

Armistead C. Neely and Brian Cheney (Chandler, AZ), brought home a second-place finish when they lost to Neal Newman (Columbus, OH) and Larry Turville (Dublin, OH). Padg Bolton and his teammate Steve Cornell (Oakland, CA) made it to the semi-finals as did Brian Marcus (Duluth, GA) and Jon S. Hainline (Miami, FL). Marcus and Hainline took the match in the playoff for third place. Other quarterfinalists were the teams of Barry T. Conway and Jerry L. Kirk (Atlanta, GA), Jerry W. McEwen and Hugh Thomson (Lilburn, GA), Jasper, GA’s Howard L. Hunt’s team, and Louisville, KY’s Greg K. Stephenson’s team.

The USTA Southern Section was well represented at the Men’s 60 Clay Court Championships with 33 men in the singles draw. The doubles draw had nine all southern teams competing.

Bailey Brown (Atlanta, GA) and his teammate Leland B. Housman (San Diego, CA) had the best showing of all the southern men’s doubles teams at the Men's 60 Championships. They made it to the semifinals where they lost to Dean Corley and Michael D. Stewart (California). The team of Jerry L. Kirk (Atlanta, GA) and Hugh Thomson (Lilburn, GA) made it to the quarterfinals where they had to retire due to an injury. In singles play Randy L. Garrett (Villa Rica, GA) won the consolation draw beating Julian C. Rainwater (Jacksonville, FL) in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
