The Paul Rowton Indoor Tennis Center, Paducah, KY

October 7, 2005 02:14 PM

As legend has it, Paducah, Kentucky was named in honor of a local Indian Chief named Paduke by town founder General William Clark in 1818. One hundred and eighty-five years later an indoor tennis facility opened in Paducah which was named for another Kentucky legend, Paul Rowton, a member of the Kentucky Tennis Hall of Fame. Founded by Paul and his son Nathan in January 2004 the facility opened its doors already a Tennis Welcome Center.

The Paul Rowton Indoor Tennis Center is currently an all-indoor facility with six courts. Expansion plans are currently in place to add two additional indoor courts and four outdoor courts. The center sits on seven acres of land and has plenty of room to expand. Currently the center has four teaching professionals, including Paul and Nathan.

When the tennis center became a TWC, they were a new facility and wanted to attract anyone and everyone to become members and players. The benefit of being a TWC was that it presented another opportunity for the Rowan Family to market their facility to the people of Paducah. Planning ahead Nathan actually signed the facility up to be a TWC before the doors even opened to the public.

The Rowton Tennis Center offers many programs for both juniors and adults. The adults can take part in various clinics including special 2.0 and 2.5 beginner clinics and adult leagues such as the USTA's USA League Tennis and USA Team Tennis programs as well as the center's own internal club leagues.

Juniors can join a development program that is available to players at all levels. There are “competitive edge” training camps that take place prior to major state championships. Juniors are also offered a unique "footwork clinic."

Now that Rowton has established itself as an exceptional facility, they have set their sites on growing the game of tennis. New players are key to the development of the facility and the growth of tennis.

“We have reached out to new players through beginner adult programs for the 2.0 and 2.5 levels” said Nathan Rowton. “We also have junior programs for the beginner level and evening programs for the working adult. We are constantly looking for ways to provide better service such as handing out lesson and clinic appointment cards and to have an informative website.”

It is no surprise that the Paul Rowton Indoor Tennis Center has already received both the 2004 USTA Outstanding Tennis Facility Award and the 2004 Kentucky Tennis Facility of the Year Award.
