Brookhaven Tennis Courts, Brookhaven, MS

October 7, 2005 02:04 PM

The Brookhaven Tennis Courts became a Tennis Welcome Center just last year, a decision that has helped them become one of the most successful public courts in the state of Mississippi. With six well lit outdoor courts available to public and two certified professionals working at the site, it is no wonder this site is so popular.

The facility offers a wide range of programs for players at every level for the purpsoe of introducing, re-introducing, or developing their tennis skills. There are free introductory classes for the beginners and ladders, round robins, and USA Team Tennis for the seasoned adults and juniors.

The Brookhaven Parks and Recreation Department was a recipient of a “Tennis in the Parks” grant in 2004. These funds were used to promote the various programs available, help off-set the initial costs for beginners, and to coordinate all the programs at the Tennis Courts.

In the last year, as Brookhaven became a TWC, they wanted to not only be a popular place for current tennis players, they wanted to introduce tennis to everyone in the community.

“During this past summer we have seen a large increase in juniors and adults playing tennis at our courts” said Karen Harveston, TWC Director.

Brookhaven has also made some improvements including building two pavilions for the athletes, updating the courts with wind screens, and adding more free workshops for adults and juniors.

At Brookhaven you will find a dedicated staff that includes a tennis pro with over 30 years experience. They have also invited the local junior college tennis team to teach their tennis skills to the youth of Brookhaven.

“Local schools within the area have been bringing their students to the facility as a way to introduce their students to the game and to add a new sport to the curriculum” said Karen Harveston. “These students in turn go home and tell their parents who then decide to come to facility and attend one of the free workshops offered for adults.”

As parts of Mississippi continue to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the Brookhaven TWC hopes to be a place where the community can come together and grow strong through the game of tennis.
