October 7, 2005 10:22 AM

Tennis enthusiasts in Shreveport, LA have become spoiled thanks to their unfettered access to the Querbes Tennis Center. The facility, which opened in 1965 is located in Querbes Park and is surrounded by an 18-hole golf course, a gym, and a swimming pool. It is no wonder Querbes has been named several times as a top 25 Municipal Facility in the United States.

Within the walls of the Querbes Tennis Center, players and spectators can find a pro shop, locker rooms, and one of the best observation decks in the region for watching tennis. When out playing the sport they love, the athletes have six clay courts, five hard courts, a backboard complex, and two mini courts to use so that they can master their skills with that it has to offer.

Like other facilities, Querbes became a Tennis Welcome Center to promote both itself and the future growth of the game. Being designated a TWC has increased the visitations to the center from both within and outside of Shreveport.

Richard Verzaal, the director of the Querbes Tennis Center has been instrumental in promoting the game of tennis and believes that becoming a TWC has allowed the center to offer new programs.

“We started a low cost youth program similar to our very successful Fun, Friends, and Fitness for adults program that encourages friends to come to the center, get active, and play the game of tennis” said Verzaal.

The tennis center also has been active in promoting the facility and the sport to new players. Verzall has appeared on television to promote free clinics at the Querbes center and they offer a parks and recreation program for local children who cannot afford lessons for free. The center also offers two Special Populations programs.

Querbes Tennis Center has hosted numerous high profile events including National, Sectional, and State tournaments over the years. The facility has played host to many nationally recognizable professional players have played on these courts such as Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Chandra Rubin, Tracy Austin, and many other.

The dedicated staff and the community of Shreveport have made Querbes one of the best Tennis Welcome Centers in the country.
