Dothan, AL is a small city located in the south-east corner of Alabama. The city, which is only 20 miles from both the Florida and Georgia borders, is home to the Westgate Tennis Center, one of the southeast’s finest tennis facilities. A winner of three national facility awards and host to national-level amateur competition and a professional women’s circuit event.

Westgate Tennis Center is a public facility located in Westgate Park. The tennis center is dedicated to providing athletes and spectators a top quality up-to-date facility that is efficient in service and has the highest quality of comfort.

The facility has world class amenities and 16 well lit courts. The stadium court is built to professional standards and is sunken six feet below grade with sky box seating. Additionally, a 3,500 sq. ft. observation deck provides elevated viewing of the entire grounds.

In an effort to further their promotion of tennis within the community Westgate signed on to become a Tennis Welcome Center when the initiative was first announced.

“We are trying to reach the people who don’t know the sport,” said Don Bryan, the center manager. “That was the main thrust of the Tennis Welcome Center program. We were trying to use the program exactly as it was designed.”

Westgate offers many quality programs for the public to participate in. The center hosts approximately 12 major tennis events a year and numerous local tournaments.

“We’ve been running the USTA programs for nine years now…We started full-year programs in 1991 and USA League Tennis programs in 1996. We had tennis leagues since the late 1970,” said Bryan.

The center also offers tennis lessons taught by Keith Forrester, a USPTA certified pro. Lessons are for all player types, beginners through advanced players and all age groups. The tennis center is extremely interested in promoting the sport of tennis to new players.

“We also encourage the beginner lesson programs, especially the adults, to attend our “Bring a Buddy” program,” said Bryan. “We don’t turn anybody away. If we have more attending, we add more instructors. We had 32 adults in a recent night beginning lesson.”

The future of tennis in Dothan looks bright. As a TWC, Westgate will continue its effort by promoting tennis to new and returning players. They want to continue to increase regional and national exposure for the center and Dothan.
