Hot Springs Village Tennis Center

September 26, 2005 11:13 AM

Hot Springs Village, AR is a lovely gated community nestled in the Ouachita Mountains of west central Arkansas. With one of the lowest crime rates in the nation its 15,000 residents enjoy an active lifestyle, including first rate tennis at the popular Hot Springs Village Tennis Center.

With its 13 clay and hard courts and a USPTA certified teaching staff the tennis center has earned the distinction of being one of the top Tennis Welcome Centers in the USTA Southern Section.

It offers a wide variety of programs to the community including, free Introductory classes, round robin play, tennis ladders, USA Tennis Free for Alls, USA Team Tennis for both Youth and Adults and USA League Tennis. It also organizes a handful of adult and junior tournaments each year.

When asked why the facility first became a Tennis Welcome Center, head pro Bob Wagstaff explained that the facility was just trying to promote tennis and figured being a TWC would help them to cover all the angles.

“Even though we’re primarily a retirement community, we have all ages that play here,” said Wagstaff.

The facility has been very successful at piquing the interest of the non tennis playing public as it regularly sends a Hot Springs Village Tennis Association representative to the community’s monthly “Newcomer Meetings” to introduce new residents to all that the club has to offer.

When it first became a TWC the facility introduced a popular new program, a weekly hit session with ball machines and coaches.

“We have a hit session every week. You can sign up for just one session at a time and hit balls with ball machines and coaches” said Wagstaff. “When you go to a resort, you can sign up for one session, but this (type of arrangement) is usually not available at clubs. People come to our program because they don’t have to make a big commitment. We give our players an easy way to play and a way to hit.”

Looking towards the future the Hot Springs Village Tennis Center plans to continue offering “Tennis Free for All” events and two weeks of free tennis lessons for adults new to the game.
