Essay Contest Winners Set To Attend Arthur Ashe Kids' Day

Winners of the USTA Southern Section Arthur Ashe Essay Contest will head to the Big Apple to participate in Arthur Ashe Kids' Day at the USTA National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows in Queens, NY. The Southern juniors will enjoy Kids' Day activities, a tour of the NYC American Museum of Natural History and dinner in Times Square. They will also have the chance to watch their favorite tennis stars play on the opening day of the tournament.

Singer/songwriter Jesse McCartney, singing sensation Rihanna, and power pop band The Click Five will join tennis stars Andy Roddick, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, and other top players to kick off the 2005 US Open with Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day presented by Hess. The full-day tennis and music festival for children and families -- including interactive games, musical entertainment, and free clinics -- will be hosted by MTV VJ Quddus and TV star Summer Sanders. The festivities will take place on Saturday, August 27 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

“Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day honors the legacy of Arthur Ashe and brings together some of the biggest names in music and tennis for a day of fun and entertainment for the whole family,” said Pierce O’Neil, Chief Business Officer, USTA. “Showcasing our sport with today’s hottest musical acts sets the stage for two weeks of US Open excitement.”

Presented by Amerada Hess and produced by the USTA, Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day honors tennis legend Arthur Ashe and continues his mission of using tennis as a means to instill in kids the values of humanitarianism, leadership and academic excellence.

A portion of the proceeds from Arthur Ashe Kids' Day benefit the USA Tennis NJTL (National Junior Tennis League), which was established by Arthur Ashe, Charlie Pasarell and Sheridan Snyder in 1969. USA Tennis NJTL is a community-driven program supported by the USTA, that significantly impacts the lives of America's youth. USA Tennis NJTL seeks to develop the character of young people through tennis and to emphasize the ideals and life of Arthur Ashe.
