“Fun, Friends & Fitness” Adult Program Draws 150 New Players to the Game

June 16, 2005 11:17 AM

The Northwest Louisiana Tennis Association has found the secret to attracting new players to the game and it comes bundled in a package called Fun, Friends, and Fitness. The program was initiated by the NWLA Community Tennis Association to bring adults of all ages and different walks of life together in a fun, healthy and social activity. The program has proven to be a success and has provided hundreds of new players a FUN, relaxed atmosphere for learning the game and meeting new people. Eighty-one new players have signed up for the six week summer session, and the NWLA Community Tennis Association is anticipating big numbers as the program gets underway. The six-week session runs each Saturday from 10am-12pm and provides twelve hours of tennis instruction and play for a one-time fee of only $30/person.

The program is a pathway to introduce players to “Team Tennis” and League Tennis play. Each Saturday after lessons and play, players can stay for “Team Tennis" from 12-1:30pm to learn more about organized match play. To encourage USTA membership and league play, the team tennis fee is waived when participants sign up for USTA membership. With 150 “Fun, Friends & Fitness” players in 2004, four 2.0 women’s and two 2.5 men’s USTA League teams were formed.

The Fun, Friends, and Fitness Program is exploding in Shreveport and participants are not only getting fired up about the game, but are gaining insight into the total tennis experience.

"We had a wonderful experience with “Fun, Friends & Fitness,” said Judy and Mickey Moncrief of Shreveport. "My husband and I were able to learn at different levels. We met lots of new friends and really got excited about the sport. Seeing all the facilities and meeting the local pros was a real plus. All of the pros and volunteers were so helpful. We enjoyed the bananas and health advice and I loved the chance to shop at each location. This was great and I can’t wait to do it again. Thanks so much."

"We have been wanting to play tennis for so long now and it seems we are finally on our way," said Holly Hurst, program participant. "We fully intend to become serious players and begin private lessons soon."
