Georgia Teams Dominate Southern Senior Cup

June 6, 2005 10:33 AM

The "crown jewel" of Southern tennis, the 19th Annual Southern Senior Cup, in its 12th year in Columbus, GA featured 300 of the top Southern players competing for their state team in Men's and Women's 35-75 age divisions.

Teams include several former tour players and internationally and nationally top ranked senior players competing in a unique format that awards points for victories in several categories. Georgia also won six of the ten age divisions: Women's 45s, 55s and 75s and Men's 35s, 45s, and 55s. Tennessee won the Women's 35s, North Carolina won the Women's 65s and Men's 75s and Mississippi won the Men's 65s (for the 3rd time in the last four years).

In addition to the superb tennis, it is the team camaraderie that makes many say this is their favorite tennis weekend of the year. The 35s cheer on the 75s, the men cheer for the women and visa versa. Many friendships are rekindled during these four days as well as great rivalries!

Columbus has hosted this event for twelve straight years and will host the event at least through 2008! A USTA Organization of the Year, CORTA once again offered a superb weekend of social activities and amenities for the players. The largest public clay court facility in the country, Cooper Creek Tennis Center, with 30 courts, is a fantastic venue for team competition.

Kudos to Local Chairman Ken Smith and volunteers including Nita Perry, Gene & Brenda Oswalt, Fred & Georgia Wise, Helen Martin, Jan Pittman, and Frank Eslinger for providing fantastic facilities, amenities and Southern hospitality!

Thanks to Vicki Everette, Sr Cup Subcommittee Chairman and members Susan Habeeb, Hugh Thomson, and Randy Jackson for their efforts throughout the year and Tournament Referee Carol Fowles who has been with us for seventeen of our nineteen years! Dene Owen and Terri Wiley are thanked for their hard work and great rapport with the players. The Adult/Senior Competition Committee also ensures the event's success and is led by Vicki Everette, Chairman, Steve Duffel, Vice Chairman and members Roy Barth, Gaines Dyer, Susan Habeeb, Eben Hardie, Gus Rivera, Larry Rizzo, Mildred Southern, Jenny Suttle, Hugh Thomson as well as the STA's Officer in Charge, Dudley Stewart.

We thank our captains for their time and dedication to this event! Becky Richardson, Darrell Blevins from Alabama; Jan Dennis, Hill Griffin from Georgia; Susan Habeeb, Greg Combs from Kentucky; Wayne Bono and Elizabeth Chesteen from Louisiana; Jane Holland, Cindy Sturdivant from Mississippi; Vicki and Maurice Everette from North Carolina; Roberta Case and Tom Foster from South Carolina; and Dana Butchee, John Nixon from Tennessee. They all deserve a huge thank you from their players and from the USTA Southern Section for their efforts before and during the event.

The players were eager to sign Mildred Southern's Senior Cup t-shirt as Mildred was unable to attend for the first time in the history of the 19 year event. We wish her well and hope to see her at the 20th Anniversary event next year!
