Tennis A Huge Success At The Family Fiesta Latina

May 3, 2005 03:08 PM

On Sunday May 1st, the Arts Center of the Lowcountry hosted the Family Fiesta Latina and USTA South Carolina was there celebrating USA Tennis Month and bringing awareness of tennis to the Latin population of Hilton Head Island.

The event ran from 1pm until 5pm and included dancing, music, food and crafts. Children who would otherwise be following their parents around at the festival were given a racquet and put on a mini-court to try their hand at tennis.

With the help of Tapi Hayrinen, a local professional and Ed Bernier of Tennis Inc, USTA South Carolina was able to put approximately 75 kids on court for a bit of instruction and a lot of fun. Estimates from the Family Fiesta projected 3,000 people in attendance, USTA South Carolina estimates approximately 1,000 of those people were exposed to our tennis activities.

All involved agreed the event was terrific and many of the children that attended will be contacted and put into summer tennis programs coordinated by Tennis, Inc. of Hilton Head Island. The children enjoyed the event so much they did not want to leave. USTA South Carolina was very encouraged by the enthusiasm shown from the Latin population and their interest in becoming more involved in tennis.
