Hey Birmingham, Grab Your Racquet and Join the Party!

April 27, 2005 11:56 AM

Beginning on May 1 the USTA will be hitting the streets in sixteen communities around the nation to celebrate all things tennis. These “Tennis Block Parties” will be held throughout the month of May. Birmingham, AL residents should be ready to rock and roll on May 21, 2005 as their community’s Block Party kicks off at the Pelham Racquet Club at 10am.

The Tennis Block Parties are a three-hour outdoor festival of tennis, offering people of all ages, from beginners to experienced players, the chance to learn and enjoy the benefits of the game – from fun and competition, to lifestyle and fitness. Skilled teaching professionals, accomplished touring pros and other special guests will be on hand to host this day of fun and learning.

The Birmingham Block Party will utilize several courts at the Pelham Racquet Club, with each one offering a specific activity, depending on skill level, from beginner to advanced. Teaching professionals will be on hand to provide instruction and guidance. They will be joined by a variety of special guests, from top touring pros to celebrity tennis enthusiasts.

The Tennis Block Parties will include activities such as:

  • Family Fun Zone -- Parents teaching kids how to play tennis in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere.
  • Demo Racquet Court -- Attendees can test the latest equipment on the market, including the newest racquets.
  • Tennis 101 -- Designed with the new player in mind, Tennis 101 will get you rallying with a partner in no time and on the road to a lifetime of tennis fun!
  • Beat the Pro(s) -- You got game? Challenge one of our teaching pros or top level players in an abbreviated tennis match.
  • Team Tennis Challenge -- Having fun and playing tennis on teams with players of a similar ability is the name of the game here. You’ll see that tennis is a team sport!
  • Champion(s) of the Court -- Competitors can strut their stuff and remain on the court until defeated by a challenger(s) in abbreviated tennis matches.

There are many parties and activities currently being planned to celebrate USA Tennis Month throughout the USTA Southern Section. Go here to view all of these events by state.
