Local League Coordinator of the Month

January 12, 2005 12:07 PM

Twenty-five years ago Bill Fish piloted the idea of expanding local league tennis to a national level. He believed that it was possible to incorporate league tennis players from all over the country into a national playoff system. The USTA gave the Southern Section a grant to aid in making this vision a reality and USA League Tennis as we know it was born. The nine states in the Southern Section now offer 100,000 tennis players local team competition in adult and senior mixed doubles, combo doubles, and super senior divisions. It takes many hours of work, organizing and planning at every level to make USA League Tennis the largest recreational league tennis program.

In celebration of twenty-five fabulous years we would like to honor the Local League Coordinator’s that have contributed to the success of League Tennis. Each month an exceptional LLC will be profiled on the website. Thank you to the players, captains, volunteers, league coordinators, and tennis professionals that have made this program what it is today.

Barbara Fisher

For over five years Barbara Fisher has been way more than simply a local league coordinator. She has almost single handedly kept league tennis alive in the Madisonville/Covington area. In 2004 she was the Women’s Adult League Coordinator, the Senior Women’s Coordinator, the Mixed League Coordinator, the Senior Mixed League Coordinator, the Men’s and Women’s Combo League Coordinator and the Senior Men’s and Women’s Combo Coordinator.

Her responsibilities are plentiful and include informing the area’s local tennis facilities of when captains meetings are being held, organizing entire leagues in TennisLink, registering each and every team in their appropriate league, scheduling the matches and sending winning captains their packet of information on the various State League Championships. In 2004 she coordinated both the first session of the Adult and Mixed Doubles State Championships and in May she offered a Captain’s Workshop and free tennis clinic to any player interested in becoming a league tennis captain.

While her job may seem overwhelming, she maintains that the captains she works with on a daily basis make her job much easier. “They are so knowledgeable and dedicated that they make my job a true pleasure.”
