Tennessee's Baker Has Stellar Year On Pro Circuit

December 9, 2004 09:47 AM

Brian Baker of Nashville, TN and Marissa Irvin of Santa Monica, CA were the top money winners this year on the USTA Pro Circuit.

American men were the top 11 prize money earners, while U.S. women held the top three spots and five of the top 10.

Baker, 19, won more than $32,000, his first full season as a professional. He finished the year ranked No. 177 on the ATP Tour, up 245 spots from 2003. He won titles in Tampa., Fla., and Denver.

Irvin, 24, won more than $34,170, playing in nine events and winning three singles titles. She won three rounds of qualifying at the French Open, then advanced to the third round of the main draw, where she lost to Lindsay Davenport.

The USTA organizes, sponsors, and administers the USTA Pro Circuit - the gateway to the US Open and tour-level competition for aspiring tennis professionals, and a frequent battleground for established players. The 2003 circuit features nearly 100 events for men and women. Prize money at the USTA Pro Circuit events range from $10,000 to $75,000, with more than $3 million in purses this year. Players also earn valuable ATP and WTA tour ranking points. The USTA Pro Circuit boasts as alumni some of the biggest names in tennis, many of whom have gone on to Grand Slam titles, including Andre Agassi, Lindsay Davenport, Chanda Rubin, Tim Henman, James Blake, and Mary Pierce.
