North Carolina Teams Place At USA League Tennis 4.5 National Championships

The women’s team from Charlotte, NC, representing the USTA Southern Section, captured third place at the USA League Tennis presented by Lincoln 4.5 Adult National Championships held at the Randolph Tennis Center. The men’s team from Asheville, NC. also represented the Southern Section well bringing home second place.

The women of Charlotte, NC., defeated Dallas, Texas, (4-1) in the third and fourth place playoff match. Earlier in the day, Charlotte, NC., was defeated by eventual National Champions Salinas, Calif., (3-2) in the semifinals. They advanced to the final four by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is captained by Arlene Conger and team members include: Susan Briggs, Lynne Wakefield, Diane Mulkey, Kelly Pearson, Melony Bailey, Lisa Graft, JoAnn Crolley, Diane Ward.

The men of Asheville, NC, lost to a team from San Francisco, Calif., (3-2) in the championship match. Earlier in the day, Asheville, NC, defeated Pawtucket, RI. (3-2) in the semifinals. They advanced to the final four by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

The team is captained by Robert Byard and team members include: Charles Lee, Kenneth Alexander, Christian Theodossiou, Michael Osier, Jonathan Robinson, Danny Allen, Robert McAdoo, Craig Hall, Edward Isbey, Chris Barcklow.

“We had a great run," Robert Byard stated, "Our mission was to win the North Carolina state event. This is exhilarating. This is a great group of men.”

USA League Tennis presented by Lincoln is the world’s largest recreational tennis league with more than 550,000 participants throughout the country. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the United States Tennis Association through its 17 sectional associations. The league groups players by ability using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, from 2.5 (beginner) to 5.0 (advanced). Players progress through a series of championships at the area and sectional levels culminating with the national championships. USA League Tennis is open to any USTA member age 19 and older. The league provides players with the opportunity to improve their skills, have fun, meet other players, travel throughout the country and compete in a USTA national championship.
