October 11, 2004 10:19 AM

Southern Tennis faired well at the USA National Championships held in Palm Springs, CA as both men’s and women’s 5.0 teams brought home third place finishes. The Charlotte based men’s team were defeated in the semi-final round by Southern California but went on to win against New England 3-0 to capture the third place title. The ladies of Kingsport, Tennessee defeated a Claremont, CA team 2-1 to sew up the victory.

The Tennessee ladies, captained by Margie Stanley, all played college tennis. The former collegiate greats include Margie Stanley (UNC), Cynthia Pectol (Tulane), Renee Dougherty (Auburn), Julie Jackson (Virginia Tech), Lori Hill (Alabama) and Ana Obando (Tennessee Tech). The team represented the Mountain Empire Tennis Association (META) which sponsored their trip to Palm Springs. The META team won their flight finishing 4-0 in round robin play. They posted wins over Southwest (2-1), Hawaii (3-0) , Texas (3-0), and a third set tie breaker win over Southern California (2-1). In their semi final match against Eastern , the ladies lost 2-1, losing one of their matches in a heart breaking 10-8 third set tiebreaker. However, they bounced back to take a decisive 2-1 win over Northern California to take third place. They are the first META team to reach the National Championships.
