Charlotte, NC Takes Title at 8th Annual Southern Cities Championship

A team from Charlotte, NC defeated Davidson, NC in the finals of the Southern Cities Championship, taking home $1,000 for their chosen charity, the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

An annual event for the past eight years, the championship brings some of the top women's league tennis players from throughout the South to Atlanta for a weekend of fun and thrilling tennis. This year’s event was once again held at the Racquet Club of the South and the North Fulton Tennis Center.

Over 200 women competed on 21 teams this year. All teams were divided into four divisions where they participated in round robin play.

The divisions were broken down as follows:

Red Division

Kingsport, TN (captain Marsha Lusby)
Lexington, KY (captain Heather Saunders)
Matthews, NC (captain Sharon Roberts)

Green Division
Anderson, SC (captain Lou Ann Hembree)
Charleston, SC (captain Susie Peiffer)
Knoxville, TN (captain Terryann Nelson)
Peachtree City, GA (captain Faye Livingston)
Spartanburg, SC (captain Cindy Church)
Tallahassee, FL (captain Linda Frazier)

Blue Division
Charlotte, NC (captain Kelly Pearson)
Greenwood, SC (captain Jacque Woodward)
Mobile, AL (captain Jeannie Harrell)
Nashville, TN (captain Barbara Hooper)
Seneca, SC (captain Karen Johnson)

Orange Division
Chattanooga, TN (captain Cissy Baker)
Davidson, NC (captain Ann Taulborg)

BOLD denotes Divisional winner.

The division winners then advanced into the playoffs where they faced off against each other in a win or go home semifinal round. In the semifinals Charlotte narrowly defeated Charleston 24-23 and Davidson edged by Birmingham 27-23.

Charlotte then easily took care of the team from Davidson, winning the final match by a combined team score of 32-20.

Charlotte goes home with a $1,000 check for their charity, the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The Southern Cities Championship has long helped to support local charities and causes, so prior to the start of play all teams came to Atlanta with a local charity in mind. As the championship winner Charlotte took home a check for $1,000 made out to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Additionally, first and second place medals were presented to winners and finalist and all division winners were presented with bag tags.
