University of Alabama Celebrates Grand Opening of its New Tennis Complex

August 30, 2004 10:42 AM

The University of Alabama tennis program is hosting a professional doubles exhibition on Friday, September 10 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the opening of its new varsity tennis facility. The event will feature former touring pro and former mixed doubles Australian Open winner, Ellis Fereirra and another “special guest” yet to be confirmed for the competition, which will be a 2 out of 3 set exhibition.

The University of Alabama’s new tennis complex will include twelve new courts, elevated seating facing all courts, offices for the Tide’s tennis coaching staff and locker rooms for the men’s and women’s tennis teams. The facility will come equipped with an elevator to the seating area, making it accessible for all fans to come cheer on the Crimson Tide’s tennis teams.

Crimson Tide Head Men’s Coach Billy Pate believes the new facility is one of the top tennis venues in the nation.

“Without a doubt, we now have one of the top five or ten outdoor tennis facilities in college tennis. We will be looking to attract fans with events like our exhibition, along with national college events and USTA professional circuit events,” said Coach Pate.

The courts will have a Deco Turf surface modeled after the US Open facilities and the highest standard of lighting for night competition. Coach Pate believes that the facility will be a centerpiece of tennis activity for the region and help promote the men’s and women’s teams as well as community tennis.

The Crimson Tide tennis teams will be busy that weekend with a Saturday practice from 9-11 a.m. that will be open to the public. Sunday the men’s and women’s tennis team will host their semi-annual “play day” at the new facility from 2-4 p.m. Fans can receive instruction and play games with Alabama varsity players.

Admission is free for both the exhibition and Play Day. For more information contact Billy Pate at 205-348-3686.
